Daimler has recently created a unit entirely dedicated to the development of electric vehicles: the E-Mobility Group. The new entity will define worldwide strategies and standards for electric components and vehicles across all brands and divisions of the manufacturer, from USA to Japan or Germany.
For 2018 and 2019, Daimler is planning to invest more than 2.5 billion euros in research and development, and 20% of this will be spent on e-mobility, connectivity and automated technologies. A new center based in Portland, Oregon, will lead a global network of Daimler Trucks automated truck research and engineering facilities.
Martin Daum, member of the Daimler Board of Management for Trucks and Buses, said: “We are the undisputed global leader of the trucking industry and we intend to remain in that position with electric trucks. We were first-movers on electric trucks and strive to set the standard in each relevant segment.”
The E-Mobility Group will help to pursue the best solutions when it comes to batteries, charging requirements or energy management. Earlier this month, Daimler introduced two all-electric trucks, the new Freightliner eCascadia and eM2. Both were developed with North American standards and needs in mind: the eCascadia is built on North America’s bestselling class-8 on-highway platform, while the eM2 is based on one of North America’s most in-demand medium-duty truck designs. And both models rely on Daimler and Freightliner’s recognized experience and expertise.
